Equipment Needed

To take my photos and get the right effect I would need some equipment. The equipment I used was first of all a camera phone. I used an iPhone 5 as that captures in full HD.
Second of all I would need a guitar and a stage to take the photos. I also needed some CDs and an amp.

These all signify rock.
I will also need actors who represent rock.
This could be with long hair and rock fashion sense.

Contents Pages

This contents page in my opinion does not have the right mixture of images to text. I believe that the images will overpower too much and doesn't give a good representation of the rest of the magazine. The colour scheme is good as red connotes danger and chaos which is what Rock signifies but the use of too many images makes it seem unprofessional.

This contents page has been split in to two halfs. The top half is made up of mainly images and even gives a preview of one of the double pages in the magazine, The main image is of the headline band. The bottom half is mainly text with a couple secondary images. This contents page is done well. It splits up all of the information into simple chunks making it easy to read. There is a suitable balance between text and images.
This contents page has one main image and is surrounded by text. I think the balance is just right. The image is in the centre which will attract the reader and then the text is in the surrounding areas and is minimal so the reader won't be overwhelmed.
The main image is on the right leaving all the text to one side which will make it seem like there is more than there is. I think this is a poorly designed contents page. It doesn't give enough information on what you should expect.

Mood Board

This is a mood board i have created to reflect the genre i have chosen for my music magazine, which is rock. The mood board features artists such as Kurt Cobain and Oasis. The oasis photo is from a photo shoot whereas the picture of Foo Fighters is taken from a live performance. I also have the logos of bands, Metallica and ACDC. I will use this for inspiration when I create my own magazine cover, contents and double page spread.

Concepts

Whilst looking at covers of magazines I realised they all seem to have concept behind them.
Concepts are important for a magazine and the artist that they feature. This is because it suggests how they want the artist and maybe the magazine to be portrayed.

This Mojo magazine has the concept of authority. You can sense this as in the main image of Led Zeppelin, they appear to be looking down on you as if they are superior to all other musicians who see this. The concept could also translate to the competitions of other magazines to Mojo as well. It could suggest that Mojo is better than other magazines.

This NME cover has gone with the concept of straight edge and clean. This is suggested through the colour scheme of red, black and white. Even the masthead is in white which could show the magazine is clean and superior to others. The artist has a clean and tidy look which suggests she feels good about herself.

Title Font Examples 'DECIBEL'

Here is 4 examples of what the title of my magazine could look like.
I have chosen these font styles as they represent the genre of my music magazine which is rock.
Rock is chaotic and dirty. These font styles are also chaotic.

I feel as if either one of these fonts would suit my
magazine perfectly. They represent rock which is
chaotic and dirty. They are also very eye catchy.

When making my magazine I also have to think of what
colour to have the title in. I will stick with the black.
This is because rock is dark music which will
further suit the genre of my magazine.
Also black is very simplistic so there is a balance of
chaos and simplicity.

Typographies

The typography of a music magazine is very important. It usually links with the genre of music it focuses on in some way. For this it will also link to the artist. I have learned that the main colours used in music magazines are red and yellow. This is because these are the colours we see easiest in our mind. We are attracted to these colours.

This Kerrang Magazine uses only three main colours. These are red, white and yellow. This colour scheme is used to keep it clean and sustained. The masthead's text has a smashed effect on it and uses an exclamation mark. This is to suggest what type of music the magazine focuses on which is rock this is because rock is seen to be heavy and destructive. The exclamation mark symbolises how loud the music is. The magazine uses red and yellow to draw the readers attention to their magazine first. White is also used to keep the magazine looking clean and simple even though the cover is chaotic and 'destructive'.

This 'Q' magazine uses mainly red, white and black. The colours are even used in the main image. This has been done using an effect to make the image pale compared to what the original image would have been.
Black and white have been used to give the genre of rock a more cleaner look. However the title, 'Bowie lives!' could also suggest how loud and destructive rock is with the exclamation mark. The title is in black which gives a dark feel. The paint on the artist gives an edgy and unpredictable feel.
The colour scheme sticks to red, black and white. This gives it a clean but also attractive look so the audience can see it first. It is not as cluttered and chaotic as other magazine covers to give it a more sophisticated look.

Front Cover Mock Up - Music Magazine

Before making this mock up I looked at other professional magazine covers. I eventually went with the style of Mojo without the free CD. Without the CD Mojo is a simplistic approach, but it is coloured well and catched the eye.
